We offer the most advanced orthopedic, soft tissue, oncologic, neurologic, and exploratory surgical strategies. We are among the few hospitals in the New England area offering arthroscopic surgery which is minimally invasive and reduces recovery time.
The Animal Medical Center of New England has developed specialties in response to the demand for particular procedures and disciplines. We offer board-certified doctors with credentialed technicians to care for our patients.
Orthopedic Surgery -
Orthopedic surgery is directed toward the preservation and restoration of the form and function of the extremities and the spine. Our orthopedic surgeon is involved with the care of patients whose musculoskeletal problems inlcude congenital deformaties, trauma, infections, tumors, metabolic disturbances of the musculoskeletal system, and degenerative diseases. We are committed to providing the highest quality orthopedic veterinary surgery and rehabilitative care. Through the effective integration of science, compassion, and professional integrity, we relieve pain, restore function, and promote the health and wellness of your pet.
Soft Tissue Surgery -
Soft tissue surgery deals with tissues other than bones and joints. Some procedures that we perform more commonly include removal of tumors in or under the skin, soft palate surgery, anal gland removal, and abscess drainage. Surgeries within the abdomen include removal of foreign bodies and tumors, as well as exploratory surgery to assist diagnosis and take biopsies for histopathology.
Oncological Surgery -
Successful oncological surgery requires more than a comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and reconstruction techniques for the specific organ involved. Our doctors have a thorough understanding of tumor biology, the precise characteristics the the neoplasm involved, the stage of the disease, and the supplementary therapies that may be appropriate.
Neurosurgery -
Neurosurgery involves surgery of the central nervous system and peripheral nerves and target organs. Our internal medicine specialists have expertise in intracranial and spinal surgery. Our Emergency and Critical Care Department provides around-the-clock care that is often needed by neurosurgery patients.
The advantages of arthroscopy include not only the most precise and accurate treatment, but also decreased pain, earlier return to function, and minimal scaring.
Arthroscopy can be used to treat OCD of numerous joints, elbow and hip displasia, cruciate and biceps disease, and carpal injuries. Dr. Kurt Schulz, our board-certified surgeon and specialist in arthroscopy, has co-authored the first textbook on small animal arthroscopy and is a nationally and internationally recognized lecturer on the subject. Dr. Schulz is a Certified Diplomate in Veterinary Surgery, a distinction given to fewer than 1,000 veterinarians in the United States.
We offer a wide variety of anesthetic protocols tailored to your individual pet’s needs.A thorough examination and pre-anesthetic blood testing give us a complete picture of your pet’s health so that we can tailor an anesthetic regime that is specific to your pet. We continually monitor all patients during surgery using a pulse oximeter to measure heart rate and tissue oxygenation, thus ensuring that exactly the right amount of anesthesia is being given. Additional monitoring equipment includes an ECG, end-tidal CO2, and capnograph. Our central system for oxygen, nitrogen, and evacuation gives our certified technicians the opportunity to focus directly on the patient for visual and tactile monitoring of the patient’s progress. |
