Blood Bank

Your pet may be able to save a life. At the Animal Medical Center of New England we make available packed red blood cells and plasma for both dogs and cats, so both your canine and feline friends have the opportunity to save another pet. This donor program is currently available only to our clients whose pets are patients of the Animal Hospital of Nashua or the Animal Hospital at Ferry Road, the General Practice hospitals affiliated with AMC.

We will provide a complimentary wellness exam and routine blood tests to determine if your pet is an eligible donor. We will review your pet’s red blood cell count and chemistry profile. You will be asked to fill out a recent health history questionnaire for your pet.  All vaccines must be up-to-date and your pet must be taking no medications except a heartworm and/or flea preventative. Leave everything else to our professionals.  Once approved as a donor, your pet can donate blood as often as every three months and will be required to donate at least three times a year in order to obtain annual benefits. Giving blood takes less than 30 minutes and does not require anesthesia, but we will administer a mild sedative to calm your pet. Donor pets can resume normal activity shortly after the procedure. We will treat your pet very well, giving your gracious donor a delicious treat and even offering a belly rub! Your pet will also be entitled to a complimentary bag of dog or cat food to take home.

Dr. Anna Pesillo-Crosby, VMD, Diplomate ACVECC, has developed the AMC Blood Bank as a resource not only for our own patients, but for those of other veterinarians throughout New England.  Dr. Pesillo has strived to educate all members of our veterinary medical team in the practice of superior transfusion medicine. Board-certified in Emergency and Critical Care, Dr. Pesillo has seen the critical need for a supply of animal blood products and supports the efforts of veterinary professionals in state-of-the-art care for seriously ill and injured animals.

Our clients are invited to participate in our program. Complete the online application form and email the information to ncook@amcne.com or fax to 603.821.7221, Attention: Nancy. Your pet will benefit from our periodic exams and health testing, and may be able to save the life of another pet.
