The Animal Medical Center of New England is committed to optimizing patient care by providing the most progressive medical treatment available. We are client-centered, working in conjunction with veterinarians throughout New England to offer the best diagnostic and treatment options to meet the needs of our community.
Today we are a spacious state-of-the-art facility offering emergency and referral services to veterinarians and clients throughout New England. The dream started with owner and founder, Dr. Leo Bishop, who, having a philosophy of “high tech-soft touch,” wanted to offer convenience and expertise to referring veterinarians and trust and compassion to clients.
After being on call for after-hours emergencies since beginning his practice in 1985, Dr. Bishop decided that the Animal Hospital of Nashua should serve as 24-hour emergency facility for other doctors. In 1998 he increased his staff to include dedicated emergency doctors and technicians who would be available for around-the-clock care. “It definitely took our hospital to a new level,” explains Dr. Bishop; “we can’t imagine doing it any other way.” Other practices and their clients recognized the benefits of 24-hour service and began to use the Animal Hospital of Nashua as their “emergency room” when their hospitals were not open.
By 2002 Dr. Bishop’s staff included 13 doctors and more than 50 support professionals; the hospital was outgrowing its space. The decision was made to build an adjacent facility, the “red barn,” which would become a larger Animal Hospital of Nashua, a very calm and controlled environment where doctors and nurses could take the time to provide wellness care for their patients. The original facility, the “white barn,” was renovated and became The Animal Medical Center of New England, a 24/7 emergency and critical care hospital, always available to help. The two hospitals were connected by a common diagnostic, surgery, and intensive care area, providing both hospitals with access to the most progressive services and technology. Construction and renovation were completed in October of 2004, and by February of 2005 the Animal Hospital of Nashua received AAHA accreditation.
To better meet his ideal of “high tech-soft touch” Dr. Bishop has expanded his veterinary staff to include specialists in surgery, emergency and critical care, and behavior medicine. His commitment to quality veterinary medicine includes education, the new facility offering conference rooms to present seminars for the staff, referring veterinarians and the public.
As the Animal Medical Center of New England expands its staff and technology to meet the needs of our community, Dr. Bishop continues to oversee progress with his same commitment to excellence and philosophy of “high tech-soft touch.”

AAHA – The Animal Medical Center of New England is proud to be an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) where “Healthy Practices, Healthier Pets” is their goal. AAHA helps veterinary practices provide the best in companion animal care and accredits only practices that adhere to the highest standards.

The Association provides a forum for the discussion of issues of importance to the veterinary profession such as public health and biological science. The Animal Hospital of Nashua (AHN), adjacent to our Medical Center, is our general practice hospital, originally founded by Dr. Leo Bishop in 1985. AHN is a full-service hospital that has grown to include eight doctors with a supporting staff of more than 30 professionals. Services include physical examinations, vaccinations, spaying and neutering, dental cleaning, microchip identification and preventative medicine. When extensive medical intervention is needed, the Animal Medical Center is immediately available for critical care, without the need to transfer a sick or injured animal a long distance. The functionality of an adjacent emergency/referral hospital is invaluable for the health of your pet and your peace of mind.
The Animal Hospital at Ferry Road offers a warm and inviting atmosphere coupled with personal individualized care. Dr. Judy Surdam and her staff are committed to client education and disease prevention, having personalized vaccination programs based on your pet’s health and risk of disease. Ferry Road provides a fully-equipped surgical suite and patient monitoring, detailed radiographs, and an in-house laboratory. Emergency and critical care is provided 24 hours daily through the Animal Medical Center of New England.
